The folkloric group started at the end of 2022 where its first home was under Marathon County 4-H. At the time, the hiring of a new bilingual 4-H Associate Educator, Jasmine Carbajal, sparked the initiative as she recognized a need and desire to share a piece of Mexican culture in Wausau. Jasmine’s strong passion for expanding 4-H programming led to organizing a meeting to call any families interested in forming a dance group. While Jasmine was able to support the start of the group through 4-H by providing space, technology, and costumes, it was really the first few families that made the group a reality.

As Jasmine moved to a different community, it was vital that the group kept going with the support they needed. Therefore, the transition of the dance group to HOLA was undoubtedly the correct one. Jasmine had seen HOLA be born, and grow, and it was only natural that HOLA be the forever home of the folkloric group.

“From the moment I saw the first families dance, I saw myself reflected in them as it reminded me of when I danced in Mexico. The biggest honor for me is to see the youth grow up and be proud of their roots, just as proud as I am, and to have a space to express them.” – Jasmine Carbajal

El grupo folclórico se fundó a finales de 2022, y su primer hogar fue la organización 4-H del condado de Marathon. En ese momento, la contratación de Jasmine Carbajal, nueva educadora asociada bilingüe de 4-H, impulsó la iniciativa, ya que ella reconoció la necesidad y el deseo de compartir la cultura mexicana en Wausau. Su gran pasión por expandir la programación de 4-H la llevó a organizar una reunión para las familias interesadas en formar un grupo de baile. Si bien Jasmine apoyó la creación del grupo a través de 4-H proporcionando espacio, tecnología y vestuario, fueron las primeras familias las que lo hicieron realidad.

Al mudarse Jasmine a una comunidad diferente, era vital que el grupo siguiera adelante con el apoyo necesario. Por lo tanto, la transición del grupo de baile a HOLA fue, sin duda, la correcta. Jasmine había visto nacer y crecer a HOLA, y era natural que HOLA fuera el hogar definitivo del grupo folclórico.

“Desde el momento en que vi bailar a las primeras familias, me vi reflejada en ellas, pues me recordó a cuando bailaba en México. El mayor honor para mí es ver a los jóvenes crecer y sentirse orgullosos de sus raíces, tan orgullosos como yo, y tener un espacio para expresarlas.” – Jasmine Carbajal
